Review: Cyansky K3 V2 Tactical Flashlight

My collection of flashlights and headlamps rivals my boot collection. I do not have an irrational fear of the dark. Any concerns I may have are well thought out. I spend time hunting, canoeing, hiking, fishing and those activities frequently don’t end when darkness falls. If you end up tracking a wounded animal, you doesn’t stop until it is recovered. And coming in off the river after a canoe trip in the dark may require efficient lighting to find the boat landing.

The Cyansky K3 is a tough, reliable light for tactical applications.

A first responder needs a light this solid and versatile. A police officer may need a spotlight and a few minutes later need a softer illumination to read or write by. In a car crash emergency, a responder may also need that light to break a windshield or car window.

My most recent flashlight story involves an alligator hunt in the Pearl River swamp near Jackson, MS. After some three years of near-constant use, my  old reliable Fenix had never failed me. Until it did. Naturally, we were deep in the backwaters, looking for those red dots in the dark that signify alligator eyes. We had backup lights along, so it was not a big deal. Moral of the story – never depend on just one piece of gear.

In any instance, you need the best item that can do the job.

Here are the specs of the Cyansky K3, according to the company website.

• HIGH LUMEN TACTICAL FLASHLIGHT – The Cyansky K3 V2 can emit 2000 lumens with a maximum range of 760 yards.
• LUMINUS SFT-40W LED is an excellent working light for patrol, EDC and search and rescue.
• USB-C RECHARGEABLE -The K3 V2 is equipped with a rechargeable battery. In order to permanently ensure waterproofing,  the charging mode was optimized. The battery is removed separately for charging.
• PRECISE TEMPERATURE CONTROL – More accurate temperature control is achieved by optimizing the internal manufacturing structure details. When the product temperature is higher than the safe value (131 degrees F), the product brightness will be reduced through temperature control to avoid product damage and injury to users.
• INTERNAL UPGRADE – The Cyansky K3 V2 flashlight uses double springs at the front and back of the positive and negative electrodes to enhance the shock absorption effect, prevent reverse connection,and improve battery compatibility.
• ALL-WEATHER CAPABLE – Durable all metal construction that is IP68 waterproof and impact resistant. Can tolerate temperatures of -86 to 122 degrees F.

The good stuff:

Brightness: The K3 is a light with a maximum output of 2000 lumens and which can reach a distance of 700 meters when used at Turbo. This light is specifically designed for use by law enforcement and to be used in tactical applications or even to be mounted on a weapon. 2000 Lumens available in the highest setting puts this compact package in the spotlight category. Sometimes you need all that light, especially if you’re looking for a boat landing in the dark. Or if you’re searching for a wounded animal in a swamp.

The head is designed to be a glass breaker.

Glass breaker: The Cyansky K3 V2.0 can also be used as a glass breaker in an emergency, thanks to the zirconium beads it is equipped with. The flashlight can also be mounted on weapons using special supports not supplied and also using remote tactical switches.

The possible output levels (according to the Cyansky website) are: Low 30 lumens with runtime 36 hours, maximum reachable distance 42 meters, maximum light intensity 441 candles; Medium of 150 lumens with 16-hour runtime, maximum distance that can be reached 200 meters, maximum light intensity 9802 candles; High of 450 lumens with runtime 4.5 hours, maximum distance that can be reached 336 meters, maximum light intensity 28561 candles; 2000 lumens Turbo with 2 hour runtime, maximum distance 700 meters, maximum light intensity 124609 candles.

A first responder could make good use of this turbo mode. The brightness could momentarily blind an aggressor, reach out at a distance during a search-and-rescue mission, or be a great signal device.

LED: The Luminus SFT-40 at maximum power produces 2000 lumens with a throw of 700 meters: therefore it is a light to be used for those who need to illuminate at great distances. The reflector is deep and mirror polished and the LED is well centered in the center of it: this allows to obtain a narrow, well focused and very bright beam.

Rechargeable: I love rechargeables, and have gone over to them almost exclusively. I particularly like this system: Take the battery out to charge it, or charge it in your vehicle on the way to the trailhead. Get a spare battery and you’ll never run out or power in your light.

Compact and lightweight: LED:  This unit puts out light way beyond what you’d expect for something this size. The light’s size and weight means the K3 is easy and convenient to take along and that means it will be. The weight is 4.7 ounces, excluding battery and accessories.

Do you need this light?

If you’re looking for an all-around flashlight, this may not be the best choice. The spotlight aspect doesn’t allow the beam to soften up much. It would not be my first choice for reading in the tent. It is overkill for walking around camp.

But it is a superb spotlight, and just what a first responder needs. This is the light you want on your home defense rifle or shotgun, or on the nightstand for quick reaction to strange noises at night. That is where my K3 ended up and it will be going out on the river.
