In Mali, wood-fueled campfires may be the only way some people have to cook and boil water. This results in deforestation, and rural residents frequently use small trees that have been replanted in the devastated areas. The residents say they have no choice, according to this Associated Press story.
Another option could be to use an effective wood stove. Such as a brick rocket stove. Campfires take a lot of wood, and a rocket stove can boil the same amount of water and cook the same amount of food using about one-tenth of the fuel. I have cooked complete meals using the wood chips from around the firewood splitting block.
Building a rocket stove is simple – if you can stack bricks, you can quickly create a very effective way to cook and boil water.
The materials are easily acquired – most of them can be salvaged. In the aftermath of a hurricane or tornado, there will will be lots of debris that can be used. It doesn’t matter what size the bricks are, as long as they are uniform.
The efficiency of a brick rocket stove has to be seen to be believed. Could widespread use of brick rocket stoves save some of the forests? We would sure like to see someone introduce this technology to those deforested areas!
